Within the continent of Africa, poverty remains as one of the most pressing challenges of today. While progress has been made in recent decades, millions of people still struggle with extreme poverty, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. However, NGOs, non-profits, and social enterprises across the continent are working hard to tackle this great challenge. At The Harvest Fund, we've chosen to focus our efforts on Zambia, a country where the need is great and the potential for impact is significant.

The state of poverty in Africa

According to the World Bank, sub-Saharan Africa is home to the largest share of people living in extreme poverty globally. As of 2019, an estimated 35% of the region's population lived on less than $2.15 per day, the international poverty line. In Zambia specifically, the situation is even more dire, with 60% of the population living below the poverty line as of 2022. These statistics paint a stark picture, but they don't tell the whole story. Poverty in Africa, and particularly in Zambia, is multifaceted and deeply rooted in various factors:

1. Limited Agricultural Infrastructure: Many rural communities lack access to modern farming technologies and techniques, limiting their ability to produce food efficiently and generate income.
2. Gender Inequality: Women often face additional barriers to economic opportunities, despite being key contributors to agricultural production.
3. Limited Access to Education: Poverty often creates a cycle where families can't afford school fees, leading to limited opportunities for the next generation.
4. Health Challenges: Lack of access to healthcare and proper nutrition can significantly impact productivity and quality of life.

Women's empowerment is key to poverty alleviation

At The Harvest Fund, we believe that addressing poverty requires a targeted, multifaceted approach. Successful farming businesses not only depend on the resources and yield one attains but also on the knowledge of agricultural practices, business strategies, and a growth mindset. We focus on empowering women farmers in Zambia, recognizing their crucial role in both food production and community development. The majority of our women farmers live at or below the World Bank threshold for extreme poverty, however, must still provide income and food for themselves and their families.

Our strategy leverages proven agricultural technologies and training programs to rapidly lift these women and their households out of poverty. We host biannual training workshops that educate farmers on different climate-smart agricultural practices, which is particularly important to limit access to water, which is felt by most farmers, along with weekly check-ins to ensure proper crop growth. We also provide cooperatives with an interest-free loan and connect them to suppliers of sustainable technologies such as solar panels, solar-powered water pumps, crop storage facilities, seed, fertilizer, and more. Lastly, we teach women on skills such as financial literacy, bookkeeping, and more.

By doing so, we aim to create a ripple effect that touches various aspects of their lives:

1. Increased Income: With better farming techniques and technologies, women can increase their crop yields and income.
2. Access to Education: Higher incomes mean families can afford school fees, breaking the cycle of poverty for the next generation.
3. Economic Empowerment: By focusing on women's economic empowerment, we help address gender inequality and promote women's economic independence.

While the challenge of poverty in Africa, and specifically in Zambia, is significant, we at Harvest Fund remain optimistic. We've seen firsthand how targeted interventions can make a real difference in people's lives. Every woman farmer who moves above the poverty line represents a family with new opportunities, a community with more resources, and a step towards a more prosperous Zambia.
